Analogue taxi meters no longer permitted

May 1, 2026

The Passenger Transportation Board wishes to remind all taxi licensees that new standards for taxi meters have now taken effect as of today, May 1, 2026.

As of today, analogue taxi meters and some early digital-electronic taxi meters are no longer permitted. The Board’s taxi meter requirements are rules that are legally binding and compulsory for all affected licensees.

To give taxi licensees plenty of time to modernize their meters, the Board provided notice on February 4, 2025 that these new meter standards would be taking effect on May 1, 2026.

The Board subsequently provided a reminder notice on March 12, 2026.

Taxi licensees on the data in communities under 10,000 list are being provided with a longer timeline, yet to be determined. The Board nonetheless encourages these licensees to modernize their meters so they can provide trip data submissions.

We appreciate that technology modernization can be expensive. Part of the reason the Board is implementing new taxi rate structures across the province is to provide flexibility for licensees to establish and adjust rates that reflect the costs of doing business. This includes the ability to factor costs related to meter upgrades.
