Starting in 2026, the Passenger Transportation Board is implementing new rates structures for the B.C. taxi sector. What to know:
- The Board is implementing rate bands, starting with taxi companies in Region 5.
- Geographic areas of the province in with common rates rules previously applied will have new standardized rates that fall within the applicable rate bands.
- Implementation of new rates structures will happen through 2026 and 2027 in different regions.
What is a rate band?
A rate band states the minimum and maximum rates that taxi licensees can charge in a region. Taxi licensees can choose any rate within their region’s approved band. No need to apply to the Board; licensees just need to notify the Board of their new rate.
Why rate bands?
The Board introduced rate bands to:
- Give taxi licensees more flexibility and control over pricing
- Reduce the need for applications and paperwork
- Keep fares affordable while supporting long-term sustainability in the taxi industry
Who sets the bands?
Rate bands are set by the Board using:
- Trip and cost data from across B.C.
- Regional operating conditions
- Input from industry and stakeholders
Do I need to change my rate?
Once the Board establishes a rate band in a region, all taxi licensees within that region are required to charge rates that are within that band.
- If your rate is within the band → You can keep it.
- If your rate is above the band → You have until 2028 to adjust it. You may want to make incremental changes. You can change your rate every 6 months with a simple notification form.
- If your rate is below the band → You have until 2029 to adjust it. You may want to make incremental changes You can change your rate every 6 months with a simple notification form.
